'Trust Your Eyes to Turtle'

Sunglasses

Selecting the right sunglasses is an important choice to protect your eyes and safeguard you vision. Let Thomas Turtle Opticians assist you in selecting the glasses right for you and your lifestyle.

Sunglasses can help your eyes in 2 important ways. They protect against the sun's damaging rays, and enhance the normal light-filtering capabilities of your eyes. Good sunglasses will reduce glare, filter out 99% of ultraviolet rays, provide visual protection, are comfortable, and not distort colors.

UV Protection

The less UV rays that get through, the better. Your sunglasses should block at least 99% of both UV-A and UV-B rays. Lenses should also block at least 70% of visible light.

Lens Color

Neutral grey or smoke colored lenses provide the best color perception. Amber or brown tints or green are also good choices. If you are sensitive to light, dark lenses may be preferred. Tint is not related to the degree of UV protection provided.

Lens Type
  • Clip-On Lenses - These are used over glasses with prescription lenses. They are convenient. Be wary of possibly scratching prescription lenses.

  • Gradient - Sunglasses can be of gradient density (dark on the top, tapering to light at the bottom) or double gradient density (dark top and bottom, lighter in the center). Double gradient are useful for skiing or boating where light can come from overhead or be reflected into the eyes from below.

  • Mirrored - To further reduce the amount of light that can reach the eyes, lenses can be coated with a thin metallic film, which looks like a mirror.

  • Photochromatic - Lenses change according to the amount of light. They automatically darken in bright light and lighten in low light. Be aware that these lenses may not change rapidly enough to adjust to new light situations. The darkness of the lenses is affected by the temperature, the thickness of the lenses, and the amount of light.

  • Polarizing - These lenses reduce glare and bounce up reflections from flat surfaces. They are helpful when driving, boating, fishing, or any activity where there is glare off the water or ground.
